Five Years of Growing More Than Flowers

There is something special about reaching five years.

When David and I first planted the seeds that would become The Barn San Diego, we envisioned beautiful flowers, meaningful gatherings, and a place where people could slow down and reconnect with nature. We knew it would take hard work, but we had no idea how much the flowers themselves would teach us along the way.

Five years later, we're celebrating far more than a milestone. We're celebrating every lesson, every challenge, every unexpected success, and every person who has become part of this journey.

Every Season Has a Story

If flower farming has taught us anything, it's that no two seasons are ever the same.

Growing specialty cut flowers in Southern California's Zone 9b means learning to adapt to whatever Mother Nature decides to bring. This spring arrived with unusually early heat, causing many of our cool-season crops to bloom faster than expected. Flowers that typically enjoy weeks of mild weather suddenly found themselves racing through the season before summer had officially arrived.

As farmers, we can prepare, plan, and care for every plant—but we also learn to let nature lead.

Sometimes that means adjusting expectations and celebrating the beauty each season offers, even when it looks different than we imagined.

Patience Is Part of the Process

One of the greatest reminders of that patience is our lisianthus.

Often called one of the most rewarding—and most challenging—specialty cut flowers to grow, lisianthus requires months of careful attention before producing a single bloom. From tiny seedlings to elegant stems, they ask for patience every step of the way.

Then, almost overnight, they reward that patience with delicate, rose-like blossoms that seem almost too beautiful to be real.

Every year, watching the first lisianthus bloom reminds us that some of life's greatest rewards simply can't be rushed.

Dahlias offer a different kind of anticipation.

After quietly developing beneath the soil for months, they burst into bloom with incredible color, texture, and personality. Every variety has its own character, and every morning during dahlia season feels like opening a present. Some produce armloads of blooms immediately, while others keep us waiting just a little longer.

Even after five years, they still surprise us.

Sharing the Garden

Of course, we're not the only ones who enjoy the flowers. The birds seem to think the dahlias were planted just for them. Rabbits happily sample tender new growth, squirrels claim sunflower heads before we do, and insects remind us daily that we're simply sharing this little corner of the world with countless other living things.

Some mornings begin with disappointment after discovering blooms nibbled overnight. Other mornings begin with laughter as we wonder who visited the garden while we slept.

It's all part of the adventure.

Growing flowers has taught us that perfection isn't the goal. Resilience is.

More Than a Flower Farm

As we reflect on five years, one truth stands above everything else.

The flowers have always been the beginning—not the destination.

They've become the backdrop for workshops, celebrations, seasonal events, family gatherings, community partnerships, and countless bouquets shared with neighbors and friends. They've allowed us to support local causes, spread kindness through flowers, and welcome people onto the farm to experience a little peace in the middle of busy lives.

Flowers have an incredible way of bringing people together.

Looking Ahead

If there's one thing we've learned over the past five years, it's that farming requires equal parts planning, patience, humility, and hope.

There will always be weather we can't control, pests eager to enjoy the harvest before we do, and seasons that test our resilience. But there will also be the excitement of the first lisianthus bloom, the joy of dahlia season arriving once again, and the privilege of sharing those moments with our community.

As we celebrate five years at The Barn San Diego, our hearts are full of gratitude.

Thank you to everyone who has visited the farm, attended an event, purchased flowers, encouraged our dream, or simply followed along on this journey. Your support has helped this little flower farm grow into something far greater than we ever imagined.

Here's to another season of planting seeds, embracing the unexpected, and continuing to cultivate beauty, connection, and kindness—one bloom at a time.
